Bayern Win Eighth Consecutive Bundesliga Title
Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 1-0 to seal the Bundesliga title for an eighth consecutive occasion.
Top scorer Robert Lewandowski chested down a chipped pass from Jerome Boateng to net the winner before Bayern players celebrated in a near-empty Weser Stadium.
This was Bayern’s 11th straight win and put them 10 points ahead of nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund who have three games left to play.
Bayern weren’t at their best against the relegation battlers, although Kingsley Coman twice came close for Hansi Flick’s side, while Maximilian Eggestein threatened for the hosts from distance.
Alphonso Davies was sent-off with 11 minutes remaining after picking up his second yellow card.
Bayern’s form since Flick took over as interim head coach in November after the club sacked Niko Kovac, has been nothing short of sensational.
Flick has overseen a stunning 26 wins from 29 games across all competitions since taking over, the best start by any Bayern boss.
Key to this superb run has been the form of Lewandowski, whose 31 Bundesliga goals so far this season has equalled the highest total by a foreign player. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, now at Arsenal, scored 31 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund in 2016-17.
Thomas Muller has regained his old glow and has taken over the mantle of top assist provider, setting up 20 goals so far in the Bundesliga, the highest total since data collection began in 1992/93.
Bayern’s Canadian starlet Davies has been another plus for Flick. The 19-year-old had started his transition from winger to full-back before Kovac’s departure but has taken his game to a whole new level over the last few months, and was rewarded with a new long-term deal in April.
Davies’ exceptional form has allowed David Alaba to move to centre-back where he has excelled and helped to cure the side’s defensive problems prior to Flick taking over.
Flick has been rewarded for his excellent work by landing the job on a permanent basis with a contract that expires in 2023.
The four-time Bundesliga winning former Bayern midfielder now has his sights set firmly on the treble as the club look to secure the German Cup and Champions League.
