Manchester City Win Record Fourth Title in a Row

Manchester City became the first club in history to win four top flight English titles in a row after sealing the Premier League on the final day.

Despite Arsenal taking the title race to the 38th and final game, City knew that a victory over West Ham at home would seal the title.

They duly dispatched their visitors 3-1 at the Etihad, with Player of the Season Phil Foden scoring in the opening two minutes with a sumptuous curling effort and then doubling the advantage at 18 minutes.

Mohammed Kudus reduced the arrears before half-time with one of the goals of the season, a stunning overhead kick that flew past Stefan Ortega in the City goal.

But the home side reasserted their dominance after the break and the result was never in doubt once Rodri’s low effort had evaded Alphonse Areola just before the hour mark. West Ham only managed two shots in the entirety of the game and were well beaten.

Arsenal, seeking their first title in 20 years and trailing City by two points going into the match, were praying for an upset that never came. They saw off Everton thanks to goals from Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz after Idrissa Gueye’s deflected free-kick had given the Toffees a surprise lead in the first-half.

City’s win triggered a pitch invasion and jubilant scenes at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola cementing his status as one of the best managers English football has ever seen.

The Spaniard refused to confirm, however, that he would stay beyond the end of his contract next summer, suggesting that the 2024/25 season may be his last with City.

“The reality is I’m closer to leaving than to staying,” the City manager told Sky Sports.

“It’s eight years, will be nine. Right now my feeling is I want to stay next season. We talked with the club, we have time to talk next season because I have to see the players as well, if they follow me, they follow us.

“I want to stay next season. During the season, we will talk. But after eight, nine years…”

Guardiola was proud to guide City to their sixth title in seven seasons and will enjoy it before turning his attentions to the FA Cup final against Manchester United on Saturday where he can win a second double in succession.

“In terms of numbers, nobody has been better than us. The records, the goals, the points, the four in a row,” the City boss said.

“I said before, if you ask if you win six of the next seven Premier Leagues, I would say you are crazy. It is impossible.

“We have done something unbelievable.”
