Alcaraz Delight After Wimbledon Win Over Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz came from a set down to defeat Novak Djokovic and win Wimbledon in the men’s final.

The 20-year-old emerged from a five-set thriller on Centre Court to prevent Djokovic from winning his fifth successive Wimbledon.

The Spaniard won 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a victory that has been dubbed ‘a changing of the guard’ by some commentators.

“I did it for myself, not for the tennis generation, honestly,” said Alcaraz, who became the first player to beat Djokovic on Centre Court since Andy Murray in the 2013 final.

“Beating Novak at his best, in this stage, making history, being the guy to beat him after 10 years unbeaten on that court, is amazing for me.”

“But it’s great for the new generation, as well, I think to see me beating him and making them think that they are capable to do it.”

Djokovic was bidding to win the 7th of the last nine Grand Slams he has played in and going for a 24th major overall.

But it was not to be, and Alcaraz is the first man other than Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Murray to win Wimbledon since 2002.

Alcaraz was philosophical after the victory, saying: “It’s great to win but even if I had lost, I would be really proud of myself with this amazing run, making history in this beautiful tournament, playing a final against a legend of our sport.”

“It’s incredible, it’s a dream come true, to be able to play in these stages. It’s amazing, for a boy of 20 years old, I didn’t expect to reach this kind of situation really fast. I am really, really proud of myself.”

This was Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam victory after winning the US Open last year and avenging his four-set defeat to Djokovic in the French Open semi-final last month.
